  • Name Sarah WILLIS
    Born 1815
    Gender Female
    Notes for biography * Sarah Willis (1815 ? 1869)
    * The sixth child of Edward and Elizabeth
    * Sarah was born in Chatham in August 1815
    * Sarah married a Cabinet Maker, Edward Relf on 12 March 1838 in Findsbury.
    * Although there is no evidence, it is possible that Edward may have worked at the Chatham Dockyard, given his family connection to shipbuilding, and subsequently living in the port town of Dover.
    * The first years of their marriage were spent living in Chatham where the first two of their six children were born.
    * The eldest, Jane Elizabeth, was born in July 1838, only four months after the marriage of her parents.
    * Edward followed in 1840.
    * By the time their third child, Mary Anne, was born the family had moved to Dover, where they continued to live for the birth of their last 3 births.
    * John in 1848
    * Emma Susanna in 1853 and
    * William Frederick in 1855.
    * In 1841 Edward is not living at home, but is found lodging at the Forge Inn at Sandway, near Maidstone.
    * Before Jane married William Ewell, in August 1865, she had an illegitimate daughter, Elizabeth Bertha. In both 1861 and 1871 she is living with her grandparents and since the 1871 Census was some years after Jane had married it is most probable that Elizabeth was bought up by her Grandparents.
    * Jane and William had four children all born in Dover.
    * Edward married Mary Jane Lano in 1871 in Dover and had five children.
    * It is not known if Mary Ann married.
    * John married Olive Wood Aldridge in 1875 and had four children. Like his older siblings he married and continued to live in Dover.
    * Emma married Frederick Prentice Smith in late December 1881. She too married in Dover. * Despite both Emma and Frederick being born in the town, they settled in New Brompton, near Gillingham, where their two children were born.
    * Frederick died on 15 June 1935 at his home in Gillingham.
    * Probate of his estate, valued at £3,604 12s 8d, was granted to his sons, Frederick (a schoolmaster) and Henry (an Engine Fitter).
    * Finally William Frederick emigrated to Australia on 7 March 8178 on the 'Garonne' (ref : Victoria Australia Assisted & Unassisted Passenger Lists 1839 - 1923), where he married Alice Howe in April 1879 in Adelaide. William and Alice had five children. (this information on the family came from Melissa Shaw, a descendant of William)
    * Sarah died on 20 September 1869 of 'Natural causes'. (ref : information provided by Angela Baker in an e-mail dated 27 February 2011.)
    * Two years after Sarah's death, in the September quarter of 1871, Edward married Sarah Ann Vinall. They had no children and Sarah died on 7 December 1892 of Erysiplas. This is an acute disease of the skin & subcutaneous tissue caused by stretococcous and marked by spreading inflammation on the face & scalp - this is also known as St Antony's Fire.
    * Edward died in early 1894 ? cause of death is not known.
