Notes for biography |
Frederick Dewe Beach was born in London on March 14, 1829, the son of a merchant, Charles Beach, of Audley House, North Audley Street, London.
He served an apprenticeship with Messrs. Hewett & Co., confectioners, of Regent Street, reputably one of the largest caterers in London at that time.
In 1850, aged twenty one he arrived in the colony of South Australia, on-board the ship Arbella.
Soon after arriving, like many others, he made his way to the Victorian goldfields in the hope of making a fortune and was reported to be fairly successful in this venture, but to what degree is not known.
However, on his return to Adelaide he married in September 1852, Elizabeth nee Way, and daughter of the Rev. Way.
He started a business in Brown Street as a confectioner/baker, in a partnership 'Springett & Beach' in either late 1849 or early 1850. However, Springett appears to have withdrawn from business and in 1852 the business was left vacant; speculation is that Frederick went to the 'diggings'.
Frederick Beach is first recorded in Garran's 1854 Almanac. The business must have been sufficiently successful, as he took up a lease of a shop on the western side of King William Street (Town Acre 78, next-door to Mr. Henry Muirhead) in May 1856.
However his major business venture was started in July 1859 when he took up premises in Hindley Street replacing a vacating hairdresser, C.P. Eymer. The business remained on this site for 50 years.
The exact date has not yet been established but probably in 1868 F. D. Beach purchased several shops fronting Hindley Street and extending through into Gilbert Place (Town Acre 78). The City Council Archives or Lands Title Department may have some record of the purchase and the price paid, which may show how well the business was thriving.
Beach?s Brown Street location: T/Acre 400. 75 feet south of the Gouger Street intersection (Grey Ward) Based on Adelaide City Archives. City Treasurer?s Department (C5) Plans of Acres Books (S36) Accession 465 Item 2, Hindmarsh Ward.
What was called Brown Street is today called Morphett Street and ran from Grote Street to South Terrace. Beach was located on these premises from 1850 through to 1864 when he moved all his bakery/confectionery activities to Hindley Street.
The Brown Street bakery did however remain as a bakery for many years run by numerous persons including John Cross Gibbs between 1883 and 1885.
Before moving into Hindley Street, Frederick Beach opened a very small retail outlet in King William Street (w-side; T/Acre 78). [1] |
