    * F/Lt H.A.L.'Tim' Moran (RAAF) - Tim Moran was an Australian pilot on the squadron who arrived in early 1942. First flying the Lockheed Hudson and then converting to the Liberator and Fortress aircraft.
    * "Flying Officer H.A.L. Moran, an Australian with 59 Squadron, was on his way to escort a convoy and was in the north-east edge of the Bay of Biscay when his crew saw a U-boat (415/1405). It was 5:30 pm when Moran released four DCs over the submerged boat, the explosions lifting her bows out of the water at an angle of 45o. Now on the surface, Moran brought his Liberator (FL984 'S') round for a second attack. German sailors appeared on the deck and began exchanging fire with the Liberator, which had now expended its cargo of DCs. The battle went on for fifteen minutes, the U-boat steering an erratic course before she finally submerged. The U-boat - U-552- on her way back to base, was badly damaged and did not put to sea again until 2nd October 1943." Good-looking, socially secure and justifiably self-confident, he - like many others - was a first-rate captain of the aircraft, and got results.?
