"He was a probably a small tenant farmer for he had been able to pay for the education of his two sons older than James, had had to pay the church tithes of one-tenth of his produce, and owned a horse. .... He and his family were members of the Church of England, but it does not appear that either he or his wife or his two older sons took any practical interest in religion. He died whilst still in the prime of his life, when James was about fourteen, leaving little or nothing to is widow and children, but James's elder brothers were then grown-up and no doubt maintained their mother and their younger brother in the family home after the father's death."
